FOR BUILDERS

Building with Shaper

For relentless builders thinking about your next bet, there are three ways into Shaper: co-found a new company with us, spend a year or two as a Builder-in-Residence, or join one of our portfolio companies.

THE SHAPER MODEL

How We Build

We co-found companies.

Most company-builders start with an idea, capital, or a thesis. Shaper starts with a person. Everything follows from that ordering: CEO first, company second, and capital last.

CONVICTION ONE

CEO first.

We pick the operator we would bet a decade on, and we build the company around them. The first conversation is always about the person; the thesis comes second. At Shaper, founder worship is not blind deference; it is a disciplined orientation toward the founding CEO's success over Shaper's. We know that the CEO is all-in in ways we aren't. They carry the decisions, the culture, the risk. Our job is to be the best partner they have ever had, not to prove we're the smartest in the room. We defer to the CEO when in doubt; we say so directly when we disagree; and then we disagree and commit.

The hardest decision a co-founder makes is who to bet a decade on. We make that decision first.
CONVICTION two

Shaper is a co-founder.

Shaper is not a fund. We use personal capital, eliminate investor dynamics, and operate at the pace of a startup. Travis serves as Chairman of every Shaper company at launch and is in the work daily for as long as the founding CEO needs him.

"Co-found, not invest" means we hire the founding team alongside the CEO, sit on the founder's side of the table at board meetings, and stay accountable for our impact (not an allocation).

CONVICTION three

Having an exceptional team at launch is a differentiator.

Talent, GTM, product, finance, and operations: Shaper has these functions covered before a Shaper founder has landed on a company name. By partnering with Shaper, founding CEOs get leverage from a well-functioning operating function rather than having to devote energy and time to building one from scratch. Most company-builders sell access to a network. We sell access to an exceptional team.

The difference shows up in the first ninety days, when a founding CEO is making a hundred reversible decisions a day, and doing it faster, and better because they are partnering with an experienced team. For a micro-example, we consistently close fundraises in under four weeks because our team is always preparing for them and knows what it takes to do them quickly and effectively.

THE SHAPER OPERATING BENCH

Travis May, Founder. James Arra, Commercial. Elyse Jones Benedicto, Talent and Operations. Marty Espe, Finance. Kent Rakip, Technical. Bob Borek, Partner.

Operators with a generation of high-growth companies behind them, on the founding CEO's side of the table from day zero.

CONVICTION Four

Talent density compounds.

Smart, nice, gets things done is our mantra. It is our standard for the first ten hires, the next fifty, and the Builders-in-Residence building alongside us. Talent isn't a function at Shaper; it is our product. The highest-return lever we can pull for a founding CEO is rarely capital, a customer introduction, or a product idea. It is the next nine people they hire, and being able to close those hires before the company even has external proof points. At Shaper, we own the founding hiring sprint so the CEO can prioritize sales and product.
We know that a high-performing team of fifty outperforms a mid-tier team of five hundred. We hold an extremely high talent bar from launch, we default to no and every offer needs an internal champion. We also live our values and velocity in our hiring process is itself a recruiting signal, and it tells the candidate what kind of company they are joining. Same-day scorecards, same-week decisions, offers that do not sit. Shaper embeds that DNA in each of our companies from the start.

Smart, nice, gets things done.
FOR PROSPECTIVE FOUNDERS

Are you the operator we'd bet a decade on?

If you are relentless and love to win, and have experience founding data companies, we should talk. We co-found with CEOs across industries where data fragmentation is the bottleneck or talent is the differentiator.

Co-founder & CEO, Protege

Co-founded:

Sector:
AI training data & licensing
Milestone:
Idea to Series A in 18 months

"I came out of Datavant and LiveRamp. I'd watched Travis build the data infrastructure category from inside, and when I started Protege I knew exactly the operator I wanted on the other side of the table. The first ten hires we made together would have taken a normal first-time CEO six months apiece. We did them in a quarter."

"What's different about co-founding with Shaper is that Travis has actually run this play. He built Datavant. So when I'm out there saying transparent licensing is the platform layer AI is missing, I'm not arguing it alone — I'm arguing it with the operator the market already trusts on this exact thesis."

"I started Protege the same week my daughter was born. Most people would have called that bad timing; the Shaper team treated it as a Tuesday and kept moving so I could be with my family when it mattered most. That's the operating bar."

Arbital health

Brian Overstreet

Co-founder & CEO, Arbital Health

Co-founded:
2023
Sector:
Healthcare data & risk
Milestone:
Strategic acquisition completed in year one
arbitalhealth.com

"Arbital sits at a particularly tricky intersection — payers, providers, actuaries, and regulators all need to trust the platform for value-based contracting to work at scale. Travis understood that complexity from the first conversation. He had built Datavant; he knew that neutral infrastructure layers in healthcare are won or lost on credibility, not features. That has shaped how we have approached the market from day one."

"Travis has repeatedly changed the trajectory of this business — through sophisticated M&A thinking, careful product judgment, and a talent network that has materially shortened every senior search we have run. The best Board Members ask better questions than they answer; that has been our experience here."

"What I get from Travis that I do not get from most investors is candor. He has built and exited companies similar to the one we are now building together. When I bring him a hard problem, the answer is neither theoretical nor flattering. That has been worth more than the capital."

A PROGRAM FOR OPERATORS

Become a Venture Builder-in-Residence.

A six-to-twenty-four month seat at the Shaper table. High-leverage projects across the portfolio; mentorship from Travis and the Shaper team; a runway into a leadership seat at a Shaper company — or at the next one we co-found together.

The Builder-in-Residence program started as a workaround. We had four parental leaves in a single quarter across four early-stage companies; we needed coverage and we knew "hire faster" wasn't the answer. So we placed a few high-potential operators into the portfolio for short, high-impact projects, and watched what happened.

Less than two years later, the program is one of Shaper's most valuable assets. Builders-in-Residence lead operational and strategic initiatives across the portfolio, run rotations to find their fit, and embed in Travis's deal flow to help validate the next Shaper company. By the time a CEO is considering a Builder for a full-time role, they aren't predicting performance. They are confident they're hiring a Shaper.

Every Builder-in-Residence to date has stepped into a portfolio leadership seat, inside a company they had already lived in, alongside a CEO they had already come to trust.
